The L-1 visa is a valuable immigration option for multinational companies seeking to transfer executives, managers, or specialized employees to a U.S. office. At Powers Immigration Law, we assist employers and international professionals with every aspect of the L-1 visa process, providing personalized and knowledgeable guidance to help businesses grow across borders.

What Is the L-1 Visa?

The L-1 nonimmigrant visa allows foreign companies to transfer qualified employees to their U.S. affiliate, parent, subsidiary, or branch. There are two main types:

L-1A Visa – For Executives and Managers

For individuals in executive or managerial roles transferring to a U.S. office. Also used for entrepreneurs starting a new U.S. office.

  • Valid for up to 7 years

  • May lead to a green card under the EB-1C category

L-1B Visa – For Specialized Knowledge Employees

For employees with specialized knowledge of a company’s processes, products, or services.

  • Valid for up to 5 years

L-1 Visa Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for an L-1 visa:

  • The employee must have worked for the foreign company for at least 1 year in the past 3 years

  • The company must have a qualifying corporate relationship with the U.S. entity

  • The position in the U.S. must be executive, managerial, or require specialized knowledge

For new U.S. offices, the company must demonstrate sufficient office space, business plans, and ability to support the employee within one year.
